Recently, Alabama state troopers released information about how many accidents involving motorcycles have occurred in Alabama so far in 2017.
- 87 non-fatal accidents have occurred, and
- 12 fatal crashes involving motorcycles have occurred.
Experts report that fatal motorcycle accidents occur 27 times more often than fatal accidents involving regular vehicles. There are multiple regulations in place in order to protect motorcyclists, according to Josef White , manager at Harley-Davidson of Montgomery. These include a required motorcycle endorsement which involves a written and practical exam about safely driving such a vehicle and DOT-approved motorcycle helmets which are mandatory in Alabama.
However, these accidents still continue to happen. Motorcycles may be harder for other motorists to see, especially in a blind spot; thus, a large number of motorcycle accidents happen when another car is turning left or switching lanes.
Summer months are upon us, which always bring more motorcycles on the road. Staying vigilant if you drive a motorcycle – being extremely cautious on the roadways – is very important. All of the responsibility should not fall on the motorcyclist, however.
